Hermanus History Society Nomination for a Cultural Affairs Award 2016/17. Western Cape Government

Members of the society attended a glittering event at Lord Charles hotel in late March for the award ceremony. There were about 350 people present. Speeches were made by the Minister of Cultural Affairs Anroux Marais and Head of Department Brent Walters, accompanied by a dinner and entertainment.

Presentation of awards were in 8 categories, each had a number of nominations: Arts and Culture, Language, Heritage, Geographical names, Museums, Libraries, Archives and Ministerial awards.

Hermanus History Society fell into Archives: Best contribution to Archival heritage, 3 were nominated the history society were competing with and David Slingsby of Cape Town Family History Society Professor Nigel Worden (UCT head of history department) who was awarded in this category. We have received a framed certificate as a nominee.

Dr Robin Lee has made a significant contribution to researching the history of Hermanus. Much of our research and recording is presented in many published articles and 3 books. As projects are completed findings are recorded and shared at members meetings and in our website.
