The Golden Age of the Diamond City: Social Life in Kimberley: 1871–1920

Hermanus History Society

Far from being a backwater town, the inhabitants of Kimberley comprised some of the richest people in the world, the titled, the famous, the gifted, professionals from all walks of life, the intelligentsia, military, foreign emigres, adventurers, tourists, visiting entertainers, academics.

Work hard and play hard was the motto which kept citizens on their toes. Their zest for entertainment, formal balls, fetes, concerts, magic shows, galas, fireworks, fine dining, picnics, fancy dress balls, tea and garden parties, knew no bounds.

Social historian Felicity Jervis presents a fully illustrated audio visual glimpse of social life around The Big Hole, with particular reference to the influence of her grandfather Carl Rybnikarz – a Viennese violinist, conductor and composer- who settled there at the invitation of Cecil Rhodes to satisfy and stimulate the love of music among Kimberley residents.
