The aims of the Society are:
- To bring the history of Hermanus alive to residents and visitors.
- To create an awareness of history among the people in the Hermanus area whose ancestors lived in this area.
- To encourage the collection and preservation of historical resources
- To be a forum for the sharing of historical information through exhibitions, preservation of historical sites, the use of invited speakers, outings to useful family historical sites and through sharing historical information collected by or involving members themselves.
- To assist in the identifying and preservation of historical documents of interest, and to enable easier access to these documents for members and others
- To liaise with the Heritage and Aesthetics Committee, the Old Harbour Museum and other bodies interested in the history of Hermanus.
PRESENT FUNDING
The Society has only one source of funding at present, namely, subscriptions of its members.
ORGANISATION AND EXECUTIVE
The Society is a voluntary organisation and is managed by an elected and co-opted Committee, whose names and competences are given below:
Angela Heslop: (Chairperson) has served as Chair of the Provincial Hospital and the Red Cross
Robin Lee: (Secretary) has served as Chairperson of the University of the Third Age, Overberg
Michael Clark: (Treasurer) has served as Chair of the Friends of the Old Harbour Museum and Treasurer of the Church of Our Lady, Hermanus.
Cilene Bekker: journalist, representing the Hermanus Times
Storm Kreusch has served as Manager of the Hermanus Tourist Board
Elsabé Brink, academic and social historian
Blaise Jones, representing the Hermanus Heritage and Aesthetics Committee
